The Tomato in Winter

by Mia Cabana The flu-ravaged and freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so when the opportunity came to decamp for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say "sunshine." I departed for the land of warmth and vitamin C, visions of beaches and orange groves dancing in my head. When we touched down to blue skies and balmy air, I sent up a small prayer of gratitude. By definition food is looked at as nourishment or fuel; material that consists of essential body nutrients to produce energy, stimulate growth, and maintain life. Food "then" was a very primal habit necessary for survival. Food "now" represents the act of feeding your body, mind & soul. For as long as I remember food has always been a major part of my life. The deep appreciation for good food came along with us growing our own vegetables (working hard for a delicious tomato), with multiple trips to the farmers market and cooking by my mother's side every Saturday.   The act of eating good food to me....read more
